Does Insurance Cover Christian Therapy/Counseling? How Faith-Based Therapy Gets Billed
It's one of the most common questions I hear: "Will my insurance actually cover faith-based therapy?" The short answer is usually yes — indirectly. Here's how it works.
Insurance covers the clinical care, not the faith label
Insurance plans reimburse mental health treatment for a covered diagnosis, billed with standard procedure codes (CPT codes) — the same codes used for any psychotherapy. They don't have a separate category for "Christian therapy/counseling," and they don't need one.
Because I'm a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, faith-integrated therapy is, clinically and administratively, the same as any other psychotherapy. The faith element is part of how we work together; it doesn't change how the session is billed.
What this means for you
- If you have a covered mental health benefit, faith-integrated sessions are typically eligible just like standard therapy.
- More than 30 plans are accepted, including Aetna, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Cigna, Humana, Medicare, UnitedHealthcare, and TRICARE.
- Coverage details (copays, deductibles, session limits) vary by plan, so it's worth verifying before you begin.
Pastoral counseling vs. licensed therapy
One distinction matters here. Pastoral counseling offered by clergy is spiritual guidance and generally isn't billable to insurance. Licensed clinical psychotherapy that integrates faith — what I provide — is billable, because it's delivered by a licensed clinician and meets clinical standards.
If insurance isn't an option
If you're uninsured or I'm out-of-network for your plan, there are still paths forward:
- A sliding scale is available for those who need it.
- I can provide a superbill you can submit for possible out-of-network reimbursement.
- Under the No Surprises Act, you can request a Good Faith Estimate of expected costs.
You can see current rates on the fees and insurance page, and I'm glad to help you check your benefits before we start. When you're ready, reach out.
